Roman Column in Cussy la Colonne

Famous and mysterious carved column dated from the 3rd century, it gave the village its name. Numerous assumptions attempt to explain what it represents : a monument celebrating a victory, a burial monument, protection for a nearby town...

With a height of 11.6 metres, it is based on 2 massive pillars sunk into the grounds 8-metre deep, supporting 2 huge blocks which form a 2m by 2.08m mass and the sides of which are orientated towards the four cardinal points. The pedestal is decorated with 8 bas-reliefs representing gods from the mythology : Juno and the peacock, Minerva and the owl, Jupiter armed with the thunder, Apollo or Ganymède, Diane with a dog, Hercules, Venus, Bacchus.
