STONE PALACE ON A MIRROR OF WATER
Located in Côte d'Or, equidistant from Dijon and Beaune, Montbard and Semur-en-Auxois, and just 4 km from Châteauneuf, Commarin's castle is one of the few castles in France never to have been sold or looted during the French Revolution.
Owned by the same family for over 900 years, Commarin offers visitors the experience of a living castle, still inhabited, installed with refinement in the 18th century.
Originally probably a "Roman villa", that means a fortified farm, Commarin is first mentioned in 1214, as a "maison forte", then "château fort". Its Lords were cadets of the Lords of Sombernon, who descended from the first line of the Dukes of Burgundy.
In the 16th century, Commarin underwent major transformations, with many new buildings.
17th - 18th centuryIn the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle was partially rebuilt on the Maison Forte by Charles de Vienne, and fitted out by Marie-Judith de Vienne, Marquise d'Antigny, Grandmother of the famous Bishop-Prince de Talleyrand, Napoleon's Minister; just as it is today.
The 14th-century foundations have been preserved, on which new square towers have been built.
Magnificent stables were built on the site of a former "jeu de paume", and numerous structures were erected around the castle, such as the ice house and the numerous outbuildings.
Protected by the village residents, the castle escaped the looting of the French Revolution.
19th century to the present dayIn the 19th century, the French-style park was transformed into an English-style park. The woodwork from the chapel of Châteauneuf's Castle, then owned by the De Vogüé family, is brought back to Commarin and installed in the castle's chapel.
Numerous restorations were carried out in the 20th century.
In 2004, all the trees in the immediate vicinity of the castle were felled, and the park is now being restored.
Commarin Castle has been handed down from generation to generation by the same family, the 26th of which is now the owner, thus preserving the authenticity of the site and its historical contributions.

The interior of the castle will be open to visitors on a one-way tour from 10:30 am. The last entrance to the castle will be at 5pm.
