A bit of history

The castle's history began in 1175 with a dungeon built on a promontory overlooking the valley through which the Burgundy canal now flows. The 13th century saw the construction of a sumptuous chapel. During the 100 Years' War, the castle was fortified with a powerful wall and five towers. In 1460, Philippe Pot became owner of the castle. He was privy councilor to the Duke of Burgundy, Philippe Le Bon, and one of the knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece. He added two dwellings to the castle and refurbished the chapel. Philippe Pot's motto "Tant L Vault" still appears on the mantelpiece of the Great Hall's monumental fireplace. The chapel is entirely decorated with 15th-century murals depicting Christ and the apostles. See also : the polychrome replica of Philippe Pot's tomb, the original of which is kept at the Musée du Louvre in Paris. From the 16th century, the castle was owned by several prominent families, including the Montmorency and Vienne families. In 1936, Count Georges de Vogüé donated the castle to the State. The collections are enriched by a fine suite of seven 17th-century tapestries depicting episodes from the life of Moses. Apart from a few interior modifications, the castle has retained its medieval character.

The Bourgogne and Franche-Comté region  volunteered to pursue the restoration of the castle, making it the centerpiece of a heritage and cultural project linked to the region. Beyond its tourist dimension, the castle is part of the region's identity and collective memory.
