On a rocky spur overlooking the rich agricultural plain stands the imposing medieval fortress, guardian of the southern marches of the Auxois. The surrounding area is home to Châteauneuf, listed as one of the "most beautiful villages in France", a prosperous, flower-filled little town with a fine architecture of stone houses decorated with pediments and stair towers dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The 16th-century church of Saint-Jacques and Saint-Philippe is home to some fine statues, including one of Saint-Jean-Baptiste attributed to Claus Sluter.
