At the foot of a cirque of wooded limestone cliffs, a petrifying spring emerges from a hole in the rock: this is the source of the Bel Affreux.parking possible in front of the wash-house and the calvary.
Why such a name? Because right next to this spring is a chasm reputed to be the home of the devil, also known as "Bel Affreux" from the 16th to 18th centuries. In fact, on closer inspection, the opening of the cave from which the spring emerges looks strangely like a wide-open mouth with fangs!
But don't worry, you can take a leisurely stroll along the Bel Affreux, as Antheuil is a village renowned for its legends and, above all, for its good sorcerers, who are in communion with nature. You will be enchanted by the song of this stream as it flows down the valley over beautiful, gentle tufa cascades. This special place, with its magical, soothing atmosphere, is sure to capture your attention.
The site has been classified Natura 2000 for the protection and preservation of flora and fauna, so the caves are closed to the public. Take a leisurely 150 m walk along the stream to the caves. Parking available in front of the wash-house and calvary.
