In 1867, a steamboat was brought into service. But the smoke caused two accidents, one of which was fatal. The reels were improved by the use of steam storage boilers, which eliminated the smoke during the crossing, which lasted 1 ½ hours. Consideration was then given to the introduction of a more efficient electric turret. The restored former electric turner, which went into service in 1894, is now part of the local heritage, as is its curious cardboard tube hall.
